What did everyone think last night?

I thought the Bride of Blackenstein was absolutely hilarious. I chuckled a few times (a couple of Weekend Update jokes, digital short, Mr. Wizard) but otherwise thought it was kind of weak.

Bride of Blackenstein, though was one of the first truly original, fully fleshed out skits they've done in a long while. Did they bring in a new writer for that or something?

And again, Kristen Wiig skits bombed - the spa thing was painful, and Michelle Bachmann? Really? So obvious.

I didn't catch the whole thing, but they could have done SO much more with the "Don't Forget the Lyrics" sketch.

Ditto, Borstal! lol Eisenberg was great.

Bride of Blackenstein was one of my favorite sketches ever. Nicki Minaj was a riot. I just can't get into her music, however.

Her outfit was a trip. It looks like she was in the middle of a whipped cream explosion

The Blackenstein sketch was one of the funniest non political skit they have done in along long time.

When I read this the first time around, I mistook "button" for "bottom."

Anyway, carry on...

Miley was a terrific host last night. I really enjoyed her monlogue, which she actually made good points. Her impersonation of Justin Beiber was funny. She's obvously no Charmian Carr when it came to singing "Sixteeen Going on Seventeen" though.

Posted by FindingNamo 2011-03-06 20:35:16

But she sang a lot and she sang on key and that is more than can be said of the much more highly praised whoever that girl was Kanye West interrupted.

Also, her Fergie impersonation was really funny.

I thought she was pretty funny, and I thought the show pretty good overall, after a few weeks of duds (the Dana Carvey show was horrible).

"But she sang a lot and she sang on key"

Maybe it was because I'm so used to listening to Charmain's version. The only other person I've heard sing that song is Sophie Bould, who played Leisl in the 2006 London revival.

I didn't think Tina would play Sarah again tonight, but I am glad she did. I loved it when she said, "This week we got rid of one of the world's greatest villains and I am for one thrilled to say good riddance to Katie Couric." "I plan on running for President every four years. It's my Olympics and I am planning on getting a whole bunch of silvers."

I love Tina Fey and I love Maya Rudolph- so I loved the monologue. Also LOVED the musical guest- Ellie Goulding! This is the first time I heard her! The Sarah Palin thing was pretty funny and I'm glad they brought back Hammond for Trump!

Weekly SNL thread
Posted by strummergirl 2011-05-08 00:31:32

The Palin line was good and the Bachmann bit was sooooooo accurate. Would have just enjoyed Trump, Bachmann, and Palin (I was seriously surprised that Sudeikis did nothing for me as Romney, who I thought was the best choice to play him in the cast).

That skit and the monologue were the only stuff I care for thus far. Loved seeing Rudolph and Hammond back.

Shocked the nerds haven't started a main board thread about The Little Mermaid meets Osama's corpse. I expected "The Under the Sea parody was AMAZING."

I laughed all through the news. I loved them making fun of conspiracy theorists: "... making Obama the first black person in history who has to PROVE he killed someone...."

And Stefon. I shall never tire of Stefon.

Best part about Stefon is Bill Hader has NEVER been able to get through an entire skit without losing it.IMO,that's what makes it.Seth and Bill trying to keep a straight face. Its only a matter of time before Lorne Michaels announces the "Stefon Movie".

SNAFU - I meant to ask, last week the puppet in your profile pic was in a sketch. What exactly IS that puppet from?

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by SNAFU 2011-12-18 12:48:35

That puppet I made for SNL about 19 years ago when Kevin Nealon was playing Jim Henson at an awards ceremony. It was supposed to pay homage to Skred. One of the muppets that appeared on the first season. The sketch never aired and the puppet went into storage. It came back two seasons ago in a sketch with Alec Baldwin and the microwave time machine. Had to be rebuilt due to the face that foam rots over time. The sketch made it in but the blue monster did not.
They were having me build a Frankenstein type puppet for that Digital short but the director saw him and decided to use him instead. After 19 years he finally got air time.

Um, it's Karmin with a k and an i. And if I wore a Karmin t-shirt would people believe I was wearing it ironically even though I would be lying?

They're one of those bands that assembles at Boston's Berklee College of Music that seems just as much music business calculation as talent (see also, Semi-Precious Weapons [whom I love] and Click Five [whom I loathe]). Sometimes, I find the end results irresistible and the t-shirt's only 20 bucks. (Also, they're engaged.)

Karmin's story is stranger than the Berklee situation. They're a popular YouTube cover band that got signed to a major record deal after one of their original songs was picked up as a theme for last year's NBA playoffs. The problem? Their original songs are so bland compared to their covers. The label is foolish not to launch them with a cover.

And yeah, Amy is rocking the 1940's pin-up look ironically.

Funny, I was watching Jason dance and thinking "Damn, at what point is he going to pull a hammy flying in and starting.

Well done episode. I loved that Amy and Mya cracked each other up on the game show sketch. And I also loved the Beyonce sketch. I was hoping that somehow the Kardashians would drop by as well (and perhaps Khloe would also try and steal the baby).

Absolutely one of the WORST episodes of SNL ever. Lindsey Lohan hardly had any lines and couldn't handle the little she had. The skits were horrendous.
Digital short- horrible. and what's with wasting space with recycled commercials from past episodes?

What an epic fail.

Saturday Night Live!

But the Real Housewives of Disney is now one of my favorite skits of ALL TIME.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by YouWantitWhen???? 2012-03-04 01:05:35

I am curious as to whether it was skits not working in dress, LL not being able to recall lines (she did much better on the digital short than live - and honestly, if you look at her earlier appearances, she was always a bit wooden on the live skits), or whether there was something else going on that caused so much filler on repeat fake ads.

She showed up, got through it, made fun of herself, and honestly did not seem any worse than what I remember her from earlier appearances. So, for that, I think she exceeded what many thought she would do.

A couple of funny skits, but some just missed the mark.

I didn't think anything was funny on the show tonight. Also, it looked to me that all that Lindsay's been through seems to have taken a toll. She had no energy in any of the skits she was in.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by jasonf 2012-03-04 09:51:25

With the exception of the Disney skit, I thought most of it was pretty bad. Lindsay could barely get through a line without stumbling over it. Most of the skits simply weren't funny - like that horrendous caller skit or the scared straight one where rape just isn't funny (although to be fair I do love it when cast members crack themselves up).

Next week with Jonah Hill doesn't promise to be much better.

Posted by beautywickedlover 2012-03-04 10:48:45

I REALLY LIKED 'The Real Housewives of Disney' sketch. However, I did not think the episode was very good. Lindsay was not completley focused and she did mess up some lines. Like she said during her monolouge after Kristen Wiig searched her, maybe she did come back too soon. She was much more funnier during her appearance at the 2010 VMA Awards. I did like the appearances by John Hamm and Jimmy Fallon though.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by strummergirl 2012-03-04 15:25:09

They really peaked at the Real Housewives of Disney sketch. Cold-open was great and monologue was nice and sweet next sketch was great and then.... fizzle with some bits mildly amusing that over-extended themselves with the possible exception of the Psychic Awards. Taran Killam and Bill Hader walked away with this episode.

I thought Lindsay did fine for the most part. The scared straight sketch was really the only time she looked out of her element, looking at cue cards and fumbling lines. In her defense, that bit has been terrible and offensive for a while and those tangents written for her (as herself) did not really fit the flow of the bit. Kenan Thompson wins the week for most mugging performance, especially in the digital short where every non-Kenan voice is his Al Roker voice (which is terrible).

It was not a crash and burn or a star-turn but it was fine. She may have not exceeded expectations of either but if this were any other host I don't think it would be so picked apart.

To call it the most worst episode ever, is ridiculous. Nobody seems to remember January Jones, Paris Hilton, or the terrible nose-dive of Gabourey Sidibe's hosting gig after her musical monologue (and there was not a skit she was in after where she didn't fumble her lines). Honestly, my floor for terrible performances would be Louise Lasser locking herself up in her dressing room and incognito for most of the show after giving a rambling monologue. Lindsay was not even close.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by Bettyboy72 2012-03-04 15:52:06

It was nice to see Lindsay try, but the episode was a bust. I thought the Disney Housewives are lame. The only thing I laughed at was the skit with the crank calls but that was due to Wiig. "I'm going to a topless forest." hahahaha

Lindsay was just set dressing in most of the skits. It certainly wasn't a comeback. I really wanted it to be great.

From Rush Limbaugh's sponsors abandoning shop to the film about Jonah's post-Oscar attitude ("Oh, my god, do you ever get that feeling that you were nominated for an Academy Award? Of course you don't." "Actually I do. I was nominated for co-writing the best original screenplay." "Isn't that cute?") to that twisted Coolio sketch at the end and everything in between. The low point was the talking gorilla rape skit. Was it just to make me appreciate the awful prison rape Scared Straight sketches, and miss them after they reached an all time low with Lindsay Lohan's episode??

I admit I do find J-Pop America Fun Time Now funny almost despite myself--they remind me of some of the students I knew when I briefly belonged to an anime club as a teen... Sigh.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by taboo123 2012-04-08 10:25:49

After last night,

I think i'm giving up on SNL.
Sofia was great and held her own. But these skits and the writing has gone downhill now. I have been watching SNL since the early 80's and truthfully have never missed an episode.

But the retreads and repetition shows a lack of writing and it seems there are no ideas left.

That Pantene skit was a retread of the 2nd skit in the start of the show with the newscasters. A director takes a million takes to get it right. There wasn't much of a difference in both skits except one was a commercial for the news station and Fred Arm would get it wrong---and for the Pantene- the same thing.
Gilly...back again? seriously? hasn't that been exhausted to the nubbin?

These skits elicit a chuckle here and there- but not worth watching when we saw umpteenth versions of them in the prior episodes.

Have these writers given up?

Even quirky girl was blah. It's cute the first time around--but it overstays its welcome.

even the opening Mitt Romney segment has been done SO MANY TIMES with different candidates over the years.

the show lacks originality. it's on a huge downward slope.
WIth Kristen, Jason and ANdy leaving---------

Anyway, I still think it was a great episode.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by SNAFU 2012-04-08 13:26:43

But what would an SNL thread be without the required, "SNL hasn't been funny in years!" comments? Even at it's worse, SNL is somewhat of a miracle. The amount of work, stamina, and sheer determination it takes to put on an hour and a half long LIVE television show each week is staggering.
Sure there are shows which fall flat, that is the nature of the beast. You don't get a second take. When things click, it is amazing!

Posted by Phyllis Rogers Stone 2012-04-08 13:30:43

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by taboo123 2012-04-08 13:37:20

I love SNL and always have. It's an institution and I keep it high on my lists of everything. But I do not enjoy when people glorify it being the 'funniest thing ever', when it clearly needs work and half the season- it feels slapped on and rushed and not very well thought out. I've worked at SNL over the years and have friends working on it now. I'm not just commenting as a spectator.. but as someone who knows how the show works and the skits only get as good as the content it is skewering. And recently, there just hasn't been enough good content because they do not want to cross the lines. They are playing it safe because Lorne Michaels has been a sucker for promotional mergers on his show so it is afraid to offend anyone.

SNL hasn't been bold and daring, that's all. And that's how I feel.

for example-
why not do Keenan Thompson in Mary J Blige drag and attempt to a Burger King/chicken sketch.

Why not mock anything new in pop culture of the recent week?

Kristen Wiig mock Madonna's new video or new album?
there is just so much to attack or mock out there....
I remember when SNL was fearless---but now it's just a corporate bitch to the system.

Let's face it...

if it weren't for SOfia Vergara being there...those skits would be bland and shameful.

They just don't have the creativity and charm--it always lacks confidence and balls.

One time, I saw incredibly funny skits at a dress rehearsal. 3 of the funniest skits were dropped because they didn't have any promotional tie-ins. So they kept Tower Records skit and a STarbucks skit and Target. SImply because it was a commercial for those brands...and Lorne Michaels chose marketing over comedy.

This is why I rolled my eyes up at the Pantene commercial.

Times have changed, I know...but it always left things sour for me.

Ever since that time....

I look at things differently.

and clearly- I'm not the only one thinking this.

"Vergara lifts sluggish SNL"

I don't know why you're getting so defensive about it. You love and always will, even though you don't like it when you imagine people calling it the funniest thing ever and you're done with it but you'll dvr it for the ten percent that is funny even though it's not funny.

But that very thing is the nature of Live TV. Sometimes things are hysterical in dress but when done for air, falls flat. The opposite it true as well. I have also found that sometimes things are funnier on the page then when seen in actuality. Sometimes the concept is hysterical but the execution is off.
There were many attempts at Wayne's World in dress before it actually first made AIR as an example.
I have also discovered that SNL has a very specific demographic that it plays to. At times, I find myself outside that demographic and at a loss as to why a character or a sketch (or cast member) finds such popularity.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by Phyllis Rogers Stone 2012-04-08 14:15:36

I've gone through spates when I've hated it. Mid 90s to early 2000s is probably its nadir for me, but I just chalk that up to my own preferences. But my own preferences allow me to enjoy the hell out of the Charlie Day episode while other people scratched their heads. And its those same preferences that had me scratching my head when all the usual haters praised the most recent Jim Carrey episode.

SNL and I roughly the same age, so even at its worst, I've always enjoyed the fact that it's been a part of pop culture for my entire life.

Sometimes I think it's hilarious, some weeks less so, but I invariably always laugh at least a couple of times. And it's always fun (sometimes in a trainwrecky way, yes) to see how a host is going to fare. I still can remember how stricken Annette Bening looked throughout it, even though she seemed more or less prepared. Vegara, by contrast, did stumble a bit here and there, but I found her personality to be so winning and seemingly game for anything that I still thought she did a fine job.

Agreed

I also believe that most if not all the writers are mainly white men. There needs to be female, along with Black, Asian, Latino writers in there that reflects all demos.

MADTV had a pulse. And was a huge threat to SNL
wonder how that crumbled??

There are female writers on the show. Right now I think there are three, four if you include Kristen who does a lot of her own writing. There has always been a female writing contingent as I can remember.

Mad TV and SNL were different animals. One was prerecorded, one Live and able to be currant. Do not underestimate the importance and appeal of the spontaneity of a live show.

Mick Jagger will close the season as host and musical guest, rumor has it. I am sure there will be a lot of cameos on that show.

No, Justin Bieber was booked two shows ago but reneged for some reason.

I thought he was awkward and cute. I loved the courtroom sketch and "What Is This?".

But seriously, SNL, enough with the damn celebrity "surprise guests". It's a cheap way to get a false reaction from the audience and is exactly the kind of Carol Burnett-type stunt that SNL was originally reacting against. Stop!

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by FindingNamo 2012-05-06 15:27:01

I agree it was what they originally were reacting against, but then they found the value in returning sketches, the occasional crack-up, and now celeb cameos. I don't mind them, because they remind the world that SNL is an institution.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by Kad 2012-05-06 15:41:11

The cameos would be more effective if they were rarer, I think. Like Barbara Streisand's appearance in Coffee Talk. A true surprise.

"But seriously, SNL, enough with the damn celebrity "surprise guests". It's a cheap way to get a false reaction from the audience and is exactly the kind of Carol Burnett-type stunt that SNL was originally reacting against. Stop"

Ironically when I was making a drive back from New York, I went back into Julie Klausner's podcast with Mike Sacks about pet peeves and this came up because for Sacks, SNL was established as above that and how it is so PR coordinated. The Streisand walk-on holds up well imo, since I still get a chuckle out of it despite just knowing about it than actually watching it when it happened.

I thought Eli did good. Little Brothers sketch may go over the head of non-football fans, but there is still this issue with him vs. Peyton in the eyes of football talking heads that at this point is exhausting, grasping at straws.

Glad people now know how goofy-awkward he truly is and that he is also game for anything. Surprised they did not play up Taran Killam as Tebow beyond the motion capture stuff. Since he's new to New York it felt like it could have been monologue material.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by beautywickedlover 2012-05-06 19:40:26

I enjoyed Eli as a host. This was definitely not one of the best episodes, but I liked it. Plus, I re-watched the Channing Tatum episode the week prior and his Matthew McConaughy impression was very funny.

In a move Family Guy fans will no doubt find freakin sweet, Saturday Night Live announced this morning that Seth MacFarlane will host the shows 38th season premiere on Sept. 15. MacFarlane who will be promoting the fall premieres of his Fox animated series Family Guy, American Dad (both Sept. 30), and The Cleveland Show (Oct. 7), as well as the upcoming DVD release of his hit talking teddy-bear movie Ted will be joined by musical guest Frank Ocean.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will return to host for the second time on Sept. 22, joined by Mumford & Sons, who will be making their SNL debut.

On Oct. 6, James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, will host, with Muse providing the music.

I didn't have a problem with the Farrah joke. It wasn't at her expense.

Saturday Night Live!

Count me as someone who thinks any outrage over the Farrah joke is misplaced. Like Namo said, it wasn't at her expense. It wasn't even mean-spirited.

I thought the episode was okay. I'm glad the vast throng of supporting players were finally promoted to main players (Taran, Nasim, Keenan, Bobby, et al).

I didn't realize Kate McKinnon was gay until I read it somewhere this summer. I see why they hired her, because she seems pretty versatile, but every character she does is so intense and specific it often seems like she's in a different show from everyone else.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by SNAFU 2012-09-16 14:16:56

Keenan has been a main player for a while. He has been on the show as long as Jason.

Taran made perminent cast member in record time. He is a very strong talented performer. Also one of the more down to Earth.

Bobby seems so happy to be part of the cast now, the uncertainty has lifted, at least for four years.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by Phyllis Rogers Stone 2012-09-16 14:22:38

Oh right. For some reason I was thinking Keenan was still a featured player last year. Thanks for the correction!

Personally I thought Hader, not being a puppeteer, was incredible in that sketch. My assistant had to give him a few pointers during rehearsal. I find that character really funny! I would LOVE to see him performing at a childrens birthday party!

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by FindingNamo 2012-09-16 20:34:15

I wish SNL would break returning characters out of their sketch formats. I'd like to see Stefon AT New York's hottest club. Or working at Starbucks.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by SNAFU 2012-09-16 21:04:44

I agree. I want to see Stefon in the real world! Would be awesome. Maybe that is a moovie... it worked for Stewart Smally. Thought that movie was perhaps one of the better realized ones in the SNL cannon. Go Senetor Franken!

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by CapnHook 2012-09-16 21:25:39

I'd love a series of vignettes where Stefon stalks Seth Myers around Rockerfeller Center. These could easily replace Andy Samberg's videos. Plenty of locations to shoot them to make it different: the cafeteria, writer's table meetings, rehearsals, dressing room, elevator, bathrooms, studio tours, etc.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by strummergirl 2012-09-16 22:35:47

Glad somebody else on this planet likes Stuart Saves His Family!

And putting Frank Ocean on par with Lana del Rey is disrespectful to Frank Ocean, an actually good vocalist versus somebody who like she was on a bunch of barbiturates.

And again, about Stefon, the writers seem intent on making it about Bill doing the impression to cue cards that he has no idea what is written beforehand. Doing pre-recorded work changes Stefon's whole dynamic. Hader's a top performer but the whole role of Stefon is the unpredictability about what he has to say, even for Bill Hader.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by FindingNamo 2012-09-16 22:40:10

I think both could work. I never understood, as far back as the original cast, why they didn't make a movie with them playing their characters all over New York City. Or why they've never done it with any of the other casts that clicked.

I too LOVED Stuart Saves His Family. I also loved the "Daily Affirmations" sketch the week after the movie bombed with Stuart shoving Double Stuf Oreos down his throat.

Saturday Night Live!
Posted by strummergirl 2012-09-16 22:43:49

I mean I could see a 'Debbie Downer Takes Manhattan' kind of video sketch really working with the character around real people.

Saturday Night Live!

Snafu - awesome job on the puppets! I thought of you too when I saw them as well as the horse heads.

At the end of this week's SNL I thought to myself..."WOW amazing episode WITHOUT Kristen Wiig!" Was SO tired of seeing her monotone characters redressed in different plots. I loved her in the beginning but then just got flat out bored with her.
